A few decades ago, a group of well-meaning Detroit-based automobile designers had an epiphany, and thus was born the uber sexy wooden paneled car. It was a watershed moment (tongue in cheek), no doubt appealing to men and women of taste, those who wanted to take the “home look” with them wherever they went. Thank God trends fade, and the wood-wagon is a distant memory. Thankfully, as well, the trend was never reciprocated, and homes that featured automobile headlights, swooping metal paneling, and shiny metal rims never caught on.
This is not to rule out homes having trends and communities having niches, because they surely do, especially in New Jersey. High rise apartments flourish in developing cities such as Cherry Hill; historic cities a la Cape May maintain a decidedly Victorian architectural flavor; and typical suburban towns, such as Smithville, favor traditional American family homes, two-car garage style. Ok, maybe not always with the two-car option, but it makes for better reading.
One trend that has never gone out of style is a professionally painted, well-maintained home exterior. Exterior coloring is a different story, trending from year to year it seems. The Northeast in 2013 favors home exterior paints that are warm, cool, and neutral, with an emphasis on tans and greens, particularly soft colors that invoke nature. Bright and splashy is not trending in home colorings, but of course is always effective for an eye-catching business color scheme.
Of course there is no cookie-cutter, one-color-fits-all approach to home coloring, just as there isn’t to fashion, hair styling, and automobile choice.
